Best Walks and Hikes in the Slovenian Karst

From the Reka River trail to the border paths above Trieste.

Walking the Karst

The Slovenian Karst rewards walkers more than almost any other landscape in the country. The limestone plateau is laced with waymarked trails, sunken valleys and dry-stone walls.

1. The Reka River Trail

The easiest and most dramatic walk in the region. A well-maintained path leads from the Skocjan Caves visitor centre along the rim of the underground canyon.

2. Stanjel to Komen

A half-day ridge walk connecting two of the Karst most attractive villages through vineyards and past the ruins of the Iron Age hillfort at Komen.

3. The Border Paths above Trieste

On the Italian side of the border, the trails around Osp follow the clifftops above the Gulf of Trieste. The views are extraordinary.

4. Volcji Grad to the Bora Lookout

A shorter, steeper walk to a viewpoint above the Vipava Valley. On days when the bora is blowing you can watch the wind roll clouds across the plateau.

5. The Karst Cycling Route

The signed Karst cycling route links Tomaj, Stanjel, Komen and Dutovlje in a loop of about 35 kilometres.
